JD Vance's Senate seat in Ohio to be filled by governor's appointment as he becomes vice president
JD Vance is expected to leave his U.S. Senate seat in Ohio when he becomes vice president on January 20, 2025. Ohio Governor Mike DeWine will appoint a replacement to serve until a special election in November 2026. DeWine has not announced who will fill Vance's seat. The appointment will allow the new senator to serve until the special election, which will determine who holds the seat for the remaining two years of Vance's term. With Vance's departure, both of Ohio's Senate seats will be held by Republicans for the first time since 2007, following Bernie Moreno's victory over incumbent Democrat Sherrod Brown.
