Jeanne Eskilson Smaha passed away at 98 years old
Jeanne Eskilson Smaha passed away on March 13, 2025, at the age of 98. She peacefully left this world surrounded by her family and close priest, Fr. Michael Seavey, in Portland. Jeanne was born on November 22, 1926. She graduated from several schools, including St. Joseph's Academy and Northeastern Business College. Throughout her life, she took part in many organizations and volunteered at the Preble Street Soup Kitchen. Her childhood was filled with joy, particularly summers spent with family on Long Island in Casco Bay. In 1950, she married Donald G. Smaha and together they raised three sons. Jeanne was a dedicated mother and grandmother, cherishing time spent with her family. As her sons grew up, Jeanne welcomed students from the nearby University of Maine Law School into her home, hosting over twenty students over two decades. She also worked as Director of Donations at Goodwill Industries of Maine, building many friendships along the way. Jeanne is survived by her brother, Peter Eskilson, her three sons, Stephen, Peter, and David, and her four grandchildren. She was predeceased by her brother Richard. A Mass of Christian Burial is scheduled for March 28, 2025, at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Portland, followed by burial at Calvary Cemetery. A celebration of her life will take place afterwards at DiMillo’s. In her memory, Jeanne wished for acts of kindness instead of flowers or donations.
