Joann Fabrics closing, locals seeking alternative fabric stores
Joann Fabrics recently announced it will close all 800 of its locations across the country. This decision has disappointed many crafters and sewers who relied on the chain for affordable supplies for almost 80 years. In light of this, shoppers are looking for new places to buy fabrics and crafting materials. While some may turn to big retailers like Michaels, Hobby Lobby, and Walmart, local independent fabric shops provide great alternatives. Many of these stores are family-owned and offer unique selections. Shoppers can often find knowledgeable staff who are passionate about crafting. Approved Textiles opened in November in Philadelphia’s Queen Village. It focuses on “slow fashion” and offers sustainably made fabrics. Fleishman Fabrics & Supplies has been around for 94 years and serves a diverse clientele. Owner Joshua Fleishman expects to see an increase in customers from Joann and believes hands-on shopping for fabric is crucial. Gaffney Fabrics has been family-owned since 1970 and boasts a large inventory in a spacious store in Germantown. J&O Fabrics Center, in Pennsauken, caters to a variety of sewists and sells NFL-themed fabrics along with many other materials. Stitch Central in Glenside is a hub for quilting and fiber arts. It hosts workshops and classes, welcoming many former customers from Joann. The Quilted Nest in Collingswood specializes in quilting supplies and emphasizes personal service and community support. These local shops not only provide crafting materials but also foster a sense of community among crafters, offering a personal touch that larger chains cannot match.
