Joanne Pierce Misko, pioneering female FBI agent known as 'Nun with a Gun,' dies at 83
Joanne Pierce Misko, known as the "Nun with a Gun," passed away at 83 from a lung infection. She was one of the first female FBI agents, sworn in in 1972, after a decade as a Catholic school teacher. Misko's career included significant assignments, such as the Wounded Knee standoff. She became a trailblazer, later serving as one of the first female supervisors at FBI headquarters and retiring as the longest-tenured female agent. Despite her achievements, Misko faced workplace discrimination and sued the FBI for sex discrimination after her retirement. She received several awards for her contributions to law enforcement and women's roles within it.
