Joao Moreira aims for third Hong Kong Derby victory

Brazilian jockey Joao Moreira is gearing up to compete in the Hong Kong Derby, aiming for his third victory in this prestigious race. Moreira has already won the Derby in 2017 and 2021. This time, he will ride Packing Angel, a horse trained by Francis Lui. Packing Angel has shown promise, finishing fourth in the Classic Cup after winning three consecutive races at a shorter distance. Lui believes the horse has learned from past experiences and thinks the jockey now has a good understanding of him. The horse is expected to handle the Derby’s 2,000 meters well. Joao Moreira is a top contender for this race while other strong jockeys like Zac Purton are recovering from injuries. Lui is also looking to add another Derby win to his name, having won it in 2020 with Golden Sixty. In addition to Packing Angel, Lui has two other horses in the race: Cap Ferrat and Steps Ahead, each with their jockeys. Cap Ferrat drew a favorable position and has a shot, while Steps Ahead is known for his determination and consistent performance. Moreira will have a busy day, as he is also scheduled to ride several other horses during the Derby event. This includes participating in the Class Two Rapper Dragon Handicap with one of Lui’s horses. The Derby will take place at Sha Tin this Sunday.
