Jobseeker numbers rise by 12% in New Zealand
The number of people receiving the Jobseeker benefit has increased by nearly 22,000 over the past year, a rise of almost 12%. This brings the total to 210,456 recipients as of February 2025. Labour criticized the Government's handling of the situation, claiming their efforts have been ineffective. They argue that the increase in beneficiaries reflects poorly on the Government's policies. Minister Louise Upston noted that the rise was anticipated, citing over 6,400 people found jobs last month. The Government expects the situation may worsen before improving.
