John Forsyth finds positivity after battling stomach cancer
John Forsyth, a 55-year-old man from Formby, faced a life-threatening health crisis after being diagnosed with stomach cancer. This came after he experienced severe symptoms like vomiting and weight loss in spring 2023. Initially, he thought his problems were related to a stomach ulcer. After a shocking diagnosis, John underwent significant treatment that included a feeding tube, chemotherapy, and surgery to remove his entire stomach. However, he suffered a serious complication known as ischemic bowel, which required emergency surgery and left him in a medically induced coma for 72 hours. John recovered and continued his treatment, which included further chemotherapy. He vividly remembers his first meal after months without food, which was a simple Weetabix and milk, describing it as "the best thing I’d ever eaten." As part of his recovery, John now walks five miles a day along the beach. This summer, he will participate in the Race for Life event at Sefton Park, supported by his family. John expressed gratitude for the help he received during his battle with cancer. He views his experience as a chance to focus on what matters most in life. Cancer Research UK's spokesperson highlighted the importance of community support in cancer research. They encourage people to register for upcoming Race for Life events across Merseyside, emphasizing that everyone is welcome to join, regardless of their running ability. The events aim to raise funds for life-saving cancer research, which has significantly improved survival rates in the UK.
