John Hogan will be Newfoundland and Labrador's next premier
The Liberal Party of Newfoundland and Labrador is preparing for a leadership race to find a new premier. MHAs John Hogan and John Abbott are the two candidates competing for the position. The nomination period for candidates closed recently. The chair of the Liberal Leadership Election Special Committee, Judy Morrow, congratulated both candidates and stated it is an important time for the province. The leadership election will take place on May 3, during a two-day convention in St. John's. The winner will be announced at Jag Soundhouse. Residents aged 14 and older who register as Liberals between January 1 and March 31 can vote in the election. This race began after outgoing Premier Andrew Furey announced on February 25 that he would step down from politics to return to his career in medicine. John Abbott was the first to declare his candidacy, while John Hogan announced his plans shortly after. Liberal MP Yvonne Jones had also considered running but ultimately decided not to join the race. The upcoming campaign is expected to be engaging for both the candidates and the voters in the province.
