John Tonje becomes an All-American for Wisconsin Badgers
Wisconsin guard John Tonje has made an impressive rise in college basketball. He did not expect to lead his team into March Madness just before his 24th birthday, nor did he foresee becoming an All-American. Tonje's journey began at Omaha Central High School, where he received only one Division 1 scholarship offer. He started at Colorado State, but struggled in his first two years. He averaged only 3.6 points as a freshman and 6.6 as a sophomore. After improving his game, he finally became a full-time starter during his senior year. After graduating, Tonje moved to Missouri to continue his basketball career. However, a foot injury limited his playing time. He struggled, yet the break helped him rediscover his passion for the game. Instead of giving up, he took time to reflect and improve his skills. When he entered the transfer portal again, Tonje faced challenges finding a new team. Many schools doubted his ability. Wisconsin coach Greg Gard saw potential in Tonje and offered him a scholarship, which proved to be a great choice. In his first season with the Badgers, Tonje averaged 19.2 points and became a key player. Meanwhile, VCU senior Max Shulga is also making headlines as he prepares for his second March Madness. Shulga, from Ukraine, balances basketball with concerns about his family amid the ongoing conflict in his country. He aims to inspire young athletes in Ukraine with his success. Both players showcase determination and resilience as they pursue their dreams in the NCAA tournament.
