Johnson College hosts open house for prospective students

SCRANTON — Johnson College of Technology held an open house event for prospective students on Saturday. Many current students, including seniors Ryan Boyanowski and Lucas Fein, shared their experiences and answered questions. Boyanowski, who attended an open house in high school, reflected on his journey to the Electrical Construction Technology program. He started with no experience but found the support he needed. Now, he is about to graduate and volunteered to help new applicants. Fein also recalled his motivations for pursuing this field. His mother believed his puzzle-solving skills would make him a good fit for Electrical Construction Technology. He spoke with attendees at the open house, recalling his own experiences. Bill Burke, Vice President of Enrollment and Student Affairs, highlighted the college's focus on meeting student needs. Over half of the 700 students are first-generation college attendees. The staff aims to provide inspiration and information to help students succeed. College President Katie Pittelli emphasized the importance of hands-on learning. She stated that the college experience goes beyond the classroom, with students actively engaged in their education. The college organizes three open house events each year to help potential students decide if it is the right fit for them. Kyla Pedley, Associate Director of Special Programs, mentioned initiatives like the Hunger-Free Campus program, which addresses food security for students. The college also offers a monthly community meal for those in need. Doug Cook, Senior Director of College Advancement, noted that the college helps students find their interests and prepares them for their careers.
