Jonathan Pedneault to lead Green Party's campaign
Jonathan Pedneault has been announced as the main figure for the Green Party's national election campaign. As co-leader alongside Elizabeth May, he will take a leading role during the campaign, including in leadership debates. Pedneault expressed excitement about promoting the Green Party's vision for Canada's future. He previously took a break from politics but returned to co-lead the party in January 2025. May praised him, highlighting his commitment to justice and sustainability. The Green Party is well-prepared with 250 candidates ready to run, the second highest number of any party. However, polls show the party's support remains low, suggesting they may not capitalize on declining support for the NDP. Recent surveys indicate that only a small percentage of voters prioritize climate change. Pedneault emphasized the need for their party to maintain at least two percent of the national vote to stay relevant. While May has held her seat since 2011, analysts suggest she could be at risk this time due to decreased support in British Columbia. Pedneault is contesting the Outremont riding, which has seen strong support for the incumbent. The Green Party has reached out to other progressive parties, proposing discussions for an electoral cooperation agreement to help unify the vote against Conservatives. However, no responses have been received yet. Despite seeking cooperation, Pedneault stated he aims to encourage Canadians to vote based on their true preferences, rather than fear of losing. He believes the election should focus on the future of Canada.
