Josh Kraft criticizes Mayor Wu's housing and safety efforts
Boston Mayor Michelle Wu recently gave her State of the City address, highlighting reductions in homicides and new programs for housing and energy savings. Wu is also positioning herself for her reelection campaign. However, her main challenger, Josh Kraft, criticized her on several issues. Kraft, a well-known philanthropist running as a Democrat, argues that Wu is failing in housing production, education, and public safety. He claims that housing projects have stalled and that crime rates, particularly shootings, are increasing. Kraft stated, "All of us want a stronger and more vibrant city, but the state of the city under Mayor Wu is headed in the wrong direction." He pointed out that the number of crime reports in downtown Boston is at its highest in seven years, contradicting Wu's claim that Boston is the safest large city in America. The ongoing redevelopment of White Stadium is another contentious issue. While Wu supports the project, critics have raised concerns about costs and the lack of a clear funding plan for another needed school renovation. Kraft emphasized the lack of housing development under Wu's leadership, claiming she is far behind her promised targets. Kraft also highlighted problems with the Boston Public Schools, including delays on the first day of the school year. He accused Wu of failing to ensure timely transportation for students and criticized her overall management of the school system. As the election approaches, the debate between Wu and Kraft is expected to intensify, with housing and public safety at the forefront of voters' concerns.
