Judge considers relocating Khalil’s case to New Jersey
A judge in New York is being asked to move the case of Mahmoud Khalil, a Columbia University graduate student, to New Jersey or Louisiana. Khalil is currently detained as the Trump administration seeks to deport him for his involvement in pro-Palestinian protests. Khalil's lawyers argue that the government is retaliating against him for his speech. A judge has temporarily blocked his deportation while the case is reviewed. Khalil, who has a green card, is being held in Louisiana. The White House has labeled Khalil a terrorist sympathizer, stating he misused his privilege to study in the U.S. President Trump indicated that more arrests of students involved in similar protests may follow. Khalil has not been charged with any crime.
