Judge sets $500,000 bond in New Kensington shooting case
A judge in Westmoreland County has set a $500,000 cash bond for Iven Cashua Miller Jr., a man charged with attempted murder in connection with a shooting that happened two years ago in New Kensington. Miller, 37, who previously lived in Ohio, was arrested last May after being on the run for nearly a year. Miller is accused of firing at two women in an alley following a confrontation in Arnold. Judge Scott Mears noted Miller’s criminal history, including prior drug and gun convictions, and his status as a fugitive when setting the high bond. If Miller can pay the bond, he will be placed under house arrest. During the bond hearing, Detective Matthew Saxton testified that two witnesses identified Miller as the shooter. DNA evidence linked him to the firearm used in the incident, which was reportedly given to police by Miller's girlfriend. However, Miller's defense attorney criticized the evidence as weak. Miller is facing multiple charges, including two counts of attempted murder. If convicted, he could spend up to 20 years in prison. He is also charged with fleeing from police during his capture last May. After being spotted at a bar, he tried to escape but was later found hiding in weeds. A trial date has not yet been set.
