The Newspoint newsstand in Bishan, a familiar spot for many, will close permanently on March 31. This newsstand has been serving the community for 30 years and is located next to Junction 8 mall. The owner, Wang Yaojiang, expressed his sadness over the decision. He initially planned to close it in August 2024 but later changed his mind after speaking with local MP Chong Kee Hiong. Wang, who took over the stall in 2011, mentioned that he valued the friendships he built with regular customers. He opened the stand daily from 6 AM to 11 PM, sometimes until midnight. Wang also provided extra pay to his employees during busy periods, such as Chinese New Year. In recent years, sales of printed newspapers have declined. To adapt, Wang began selling drinks and snacks at the newsstand. At its peak, Newspoint sold about 5,000 newspapers a day. After the closure, Wang plans to continue delivering newspapers to his customers. This newsstands' closure follows the 2023 closing of the popular Thambi Magazine Store in Holland Village, which had operated for over 80 years. The owner there also faced challenges that led to his decision to shut down.
