K9 unit enhances anti-poaching efforts in Assam sanctuary
The Assam Forest Department has launched a new anti-poaching unit at the Laokhowa-Burhachapori Wildlife Sanctuary in Nagaon. This unit includes a trained Belgian Malinois dog and its handler. The deployment is aimed at preventing wildlife crimes and enhancing cooperation among enforcement agencies. The K9 unit will be on duty 24 hours a day to assist forest staff. The dog and its handler are expected to help with surveillance and related tasks. This effort is part of a broader initiative to protect wildlife in Assam, which also includes famous national parks like Kaziranga, Orang, and Manas. The biodiversity conservation organization Aaranyak has played a crucial role in setting up this K9 unit. They have previously assisted in anti-poaching operations in various rhino habitats across the state. The Laokhowa and Burhachapori sanctuaries are located near Kaziranga National Park and Tiger Reserve. These areas are important for wildlife migration and act as buffer zones, linking Kaziranga and Orang national parks.
