Kanlaon Volcano records 15 earthquakes as alert level remains high in the Philippines

Kanlaon Volcano in the Philippines recorded 15 volcanic earthquakes in a 24-hour period, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS). The volcano also released 7,198 tonnes of sulfur dioxide on December 22. Alert Level 3 remains in effect, indicating magmatic unrest following an eruption on December 9. Residents within a six-kilometer radius have been advised to evacuate. The Office of Civil Defense may extend the danger zone to 10 kilometers due to potential lahar flows. Hazards include explosive eruptions, lava flows, ashfall, and rockfalls.
