Kanlaon Volcano releases over 5,000 tonnes of sulfur dioxide in significant gas emission event
Kanlaon Volcano emitted 5,177 tonnes of sulfur dioxide on Sunday, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS). This marks a significant increase in gas emissions since the eruption on June 3, 2024. PHIVOLCS has advised against prolonged exposure to sulfur dioxide, which can irritate the eyes, throat, and respiratory system. Vulnerable groups include those with pre-existing health conditions, the elderly, pregnant women, and children. The volcano also recorded five earthquakes and released a 350-meter tall plume drifting southwest. Alert Level 2 remains in effect due to increased volcanic activity, with restrictions on entry and air traffic near the volcano.
