The Kanniyakumari district administration is preparing for a heatwave expected this summer. Authorities plan to set up special wards in local health facilities to care for residents. The Indian Meteorological Department has warned that this summer could be more intense than in past years. Residents of Kanniyakumari have already felt the heat since February and early March. Typically, the area sees rainfall in May due to the southwest monsoon. To help the public, Collector R. Alagumeena has instructed officials to place Oral Rehydration Solution (ORS) in busy areas like markets, bus stands, and schools. An awareness campaign about heatwaves will be launched using auto rickshaws and folk artists. To protect conservancy workers, the administration will ensure they have rest breaks from noon to 3 p.m. Workers will also be provided with gloves and caps for added protection. District Health Officer V. Prabhakaran mentioned that healthcare staff have met to discuss measures against the heat. Specialized wards will be available for vulnerable groups, such as children, pregnant women, and the elderly. Anganwadi staff will provide nutritious food to children in their care. Health workers will monitor seasonal diseases and ensure affected individuals get timely treatment.
