Kanthalloor Temple revival project set to begin soon

The city corporation is ready to begin the redevelopment of Kanthalloor Mahadeva Temple in Valiyasala. This temple is important for its historical and cultural value. It was once home to the Kanthalloor Sala, known as the "Nalanda of South India." The temple has been neglected for years, which has led to calls from the community for its restoration. Two years ago, the corporation allocated Rs 2.5 crore for the project. However, delays in starting the work caused costs to increase. In the latest budget for 2024-25, the corporation raised the funding to Rs 5 crore, but progress remained stalled. Now, the upcoming budget will set aside Rs 10 crore for the redevelopment. Work is expected to begin in May, with the first phase focusing on the circumambulation path, known as Sivelipatha. The circumambulation path needs repairs, and new granite will be added. The temple's leaking roof will also be replaced. In January, the corporation council approved plans for the temple's development. Changes include placing all electrical and communication cables underground and creating eco-friendly pathways around the temple. Historians note that the Kanthalloor Sala was a prominent educational institution between the 9th and 10th centuries but was destroyed by Chola kings. A stone inscription and an old well discovered near the temple further highlight its historical importance. Local councillor S. Krishnakumar promises that the redevelopment will move forward without further delays.
