Karachi Commissioner targets professional beggary during Eid

Karachi Commissioner Syed Hassan Naqvi has ordered local officials to take strong action against professional begging ahead of the Eidul Fitr festival. In a statement released from his office, Naqvi directed deputy commissioners to make special plans to tackle this issue. Last year, authorities arrested 205 professional beggars in Karachi from March to October as part of a crackdown. In the last 22 days alone, 220 beggars were arrested. Officials are now working to ensure these individuals do not return to begging. Deputy commissioners have been tasked with identifying and capturing anyone who manages beggars. Naqvi has noticed an increase in begging around markets and shopping centers, prompting this directive. Officials are encouraged to collaborate with social welfare organizations, NGOs, and local police. In January, the Sindh High Court instructed Karachi's traffic police to address begging at traffic signals. The court's order, issued on January 28, described complaints about begging causing disruption for the public. The court insisted that no begging should occur anywhere in Karachi, involving all individuals, regardless of gender.
