Karnataka farmers seek higher sugarcane prices and protections
Sugarcane farmers in Karnataka are asking the central government to raise the price they receive for their crop. The Karnataka State Sugarcane Farmers’ Association made this request, highlighting the need for better compensation. They want at least ₹5,000 per tonne, which includes the Fair and Remunerative Price (FRP) set by the government, as well as earnings from sugar byproducts. The association's president, Hallikerehundi Bhagyaraj, stressed the need for the state government to take stronger action in supporting farmers. He mentioned the importance of installing weighing scales at sugar mills to prevent dishonest practices in measuring sugarcane. Bhagyaraj also called for local expert committees to help oversee sugar recovery rates and protect farmers from being cheated. Farmers have outstanding dues of ₹950 crore from previous years that they want the government to address immediately. If their demands are not met, the farmers may protest. Additionally, Bhagyaraj raised concerns about recovery teams from banks visiting farmers' homes regarding unpaid debts, urging local authorities to step in. The farmers are also frustrated with the interruption of water supply for irrigation, which is essential for their livelihoods. They ask the Irrigation Department to resume the flow of water into lakes and canals. Bhagyaraj pointed out issues with obtaining electricity for agricultural pumps, requesting the government to ease this process. He also expressed concerns about the rise of online gaming, describing it as a dangerous addiction leading to many suicides. He urged the government to impose a ban on online gaming in the state. Lastly, regarding the rise in milk prices, Bhagyaraj insisted that any increase should directly benefit the farmers and called for the release of a ₹950 crore incentive owed to them.
