Karnataka mandates bottled water companies to buy back plastic
Karnataka's government is taking action against the disposal of plastic water bottles. The state has ordered bottled water companies to buy back used bottles from consumers. This move aims to reduce plastic waste, especially in popular tourist areas where the bottles often end up as litter. Environment Minister Eshwar Khandre stressed the danger these bottles pose to the environment. He pointed out that they are not biodegradable and can release harmful substances when burned. The government is worried about the continued use of single-use plastics despite existing regulations. Khandre emphasized that every bottled water manufacturer should be responsible for the disposal of their products. By buying back used bottles for a small price, companies can help address the disposal issue. The bottles collected can then be recycled properly. This decision follows similar actions taken to reduce plastic pollution in Karnataka's protected areas. In 2024, officials began screening visitors to tiger reserves for single-use plastics and implemented penalties for those who crossed the rules. Additionally, the use of plastic water bottles has been banned at government functions. The government hopes these steps will better protect the environment.
