Karnataka plans internal reservation for Scheduled Castes soon

The Karnataka government is committed to implementing internal reservations for Scheduled Castes (SCs) soon. Food and Civil Supplies Minister K H Muniyappa announced this on Monday. He addressed concerns over delays in the process, highlighting the need for accurate data to support the internal reservation. In November 2024, the government appointed retired High Court judge Justice H N Nagmohan Das to lead a commission that will recommend how to implement these reservations. Muniyappa urged organizations supporting this cause to be patient for three to four months while the commission works. He emphasized that there is unity among various SC groups in support of this initiative. Muniyappa also criticized those who have attacked the government for its pace in pushing this agenda. He noted that they understand the longstanding concerns from organizations advocating for internal reservations. “No one in the cabinet is opposed to it,” he stated, affirming the government’s commitment to the cause. The SC community has been requesting internal reservations to ensure that all groups benefit, not just a few influential ones. A Supreme Court ruling last year allowed states to create sub-classifications within SCs, recognizing their diverse needs. The Karnataka government aims to carefully collect data and implement the reservations without rushing, to avoid potential legal issues.
