Mangaluru: In Karnataka, communities have revived 160 lakes and tanks over the past year, according to Anil Kumar SS of the Shri Kshetra Dharmasthala Rural Development Project. This project saw a strong response from local farmers and women, who formed lake committees with the help of officials and engineers. The revival work started later than usual due to good rainfall last monsoon. However, the initiative quickly picked up pace. To support the work, teams used 242 earthmovers, along with over 4,300 tractors and tippers. Farmers took part by moving 12.5 lakh loads of nutrient-rich silt from lakebeds to their fields, boosting soil fertility. The rejuvenation included desilting, repairing water channels, and strengthening embankments. The project also focused on restoring lakes for both people and wildlife. Efforts extended to the Thyavarekoppa Lion and Tiger Safari, where 10 waterbodies now support nearly 400 wild animals. A lake was also revitalized in Bandipur National Park to help local wildlife. The initiative has received backing from local officials, ministers, and community leaders. After the lakes are rejuvenated, they will be handed over to local panchayats and committees for ongoing care. These groups will ensure maintenance and cleanliness, and training sessions are being held to empower committee members. As the monsoon approaches, plantation drives will begin around the lakes with the help of local committees. They will plant a variety of trees to enhance biodiversity and create green spaces beneficial for both humans and wildlife. By the end of the 2024–25 period, these rejuvenated lakes are expected to support local communities and restore water storage capacities. With 889 lakes revived so far, the total is anticipated to exceed 1,000, marking a significant community-led water conservation achievement in the state.
