Karnataka Speaker defends suspension of 18 MLAs
Karnataka Legislative Assembly Speaker U.T. Khader has defended the suspension of 18 MLAs. He said he would reconsider the suspension if the lawmakers appeal. Meanwhile, BJP leaders criticized the decision and called for it to be revoked. Mr. Khader stated that no legislator is above the House and denied any pressure influenced his decision. He claimed there was no personal vendetta against the MLAs, who he accused of disrespecting the Assembly and the Speaker's role. Regarding possible legal challenges to the suspension, he said it was up to the legislators to take action. He warned that if they do not improve their behavior, they could face a one-year suspension. BJP State president B.Y. Vijayendra reacted strongly at a press conference. He argued that the Speaker’s actions aligned with the State government and called them illegal and unconstitutional. He questioned why the suspended MLAs were being treated harshly and emphasized that they should be allowed to participate in Assembly activities.
