Karuna's Kitchen offers meals for one rupee in Hyderabad
In Secunderabad's Regimental Bazar, a small kitchen called Karuna’s Kitchen is helping people in need. The kitchen serves meals for just one rupee, providing hope to the hungry. Each day at noon, a line of people waiting for their meals begins to form. Karuna’s Kitchen, launched just a month ago, provides meals without questions or judgments. The kitchen operates a token system, allowing people to feel dignified rather than like they are receiving charity. Many who come are daily wage workers or homeless individuals, who may feel uncomfortable accepting free food. The daily menu includes simple dishes like rice and sambar, along with fresh cucumber. Mr. George Rakesh Babu, the initiative's founder, ensures variety to keep people interested in the meals. The kitchen serves up to 300 people each day, operating from 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. One unique part of Karuna’s Kitchen is its use of reusable steel plates rather than disposable ones. This approach helps reduce waste and ensure cleanliness. Donations from individuals help fund the kitchen, and Mr. George indicates that a small donation can provide meals for many. Although Karuna’s Kitchen does not receive government support, Mr. George respects programs that help feed people. He considers his kitchen a complementary service. As demand increases, he plans to expand to more locations in Hyderabad. Running the kitchen comes with challenges, especially in meeting growing demand while staying sustainable. Mr. George is seeking donations, like groceries, to continue serving those in need without turning anyone away.
