Katelyn Young injured, became all-time scoring leader
Katelyn Young, a standout player from Murray State, made headlines during the NCAA women's basketball tournament. In the first half of the game against Iowa, she surpassed Tennessee star Chamique Holdsclaw on the all-time scoring list for NCAA Division I women's basketball. This put her at No. 13 with a total of 3,025 points. However, her tournament run was cut short. Young injured her left ankle early in the second half and was seen leaving the game on crutches. Despite her injury, she ended her collegiate career with 3,029 points. Young was instrumental in leading Murray State to a successful season, with notable performances including a game where she scored 34 points to help her team win the Missouri Valley Conference championship. At 22 years old, Young is a senior and is eligible for the WNBA Draft. She meets the league’s requirement of being 22 and having no remaining college eligibility. This year marked her first NCAA tournament appearance, and it was also Murray State's first tournament entry since 2008. Young hails from Illinois, where she excelled in multiple sports at Oakwood High School. She is the all-time leading scorer for Murray State, with scoring averages that improved each year of her college career. Despite not being highly ranked during her recruitment, she has proven to be a vital player for her team.
