Katsura modernizes rakugo for Gen Z audiences
Edanoshin Katsura, a 23-year-old entertainer, is bringing a fresh twist to rakugo, the traditional Japanese comedic storytelling. He leads a group called Z Rakugo based in Shibuya. Katsura is blending rakugo with elements from techno and youth culture to connect with a younger audience. Katsura began his rakugo journey at the age of 15. He trained under a well-known rakugo master, Katsura Edasaburo III. His love for rakugo began when he was just a child. At five years old, he watched a performance and was captivated by the skill of the storyteller. As a child, Katsura was always eager to share stories. He was known for being very talkative, often starting conversations with strangers. This passion for storytelling grew quickly, leading him to perform at various events. Before long, he was doing around 150 performances each year. By merging the rhythms of techno with traditional rakugo, Katsura hopes to engage Gen Z audiences in new ways. His work is a unique take on an age-old art form, showing that humor can evolve while still honoring its roots.
