Kavalam Narayana Panikkar draws inspiration from Kathakali performance for new play Kalivesham

Kavalam Narayana Panikkar was inspired to write the play "Kalivesham" after watching Kathakali actor Nelliyode Vasudevan Namboodiri portray the character Kali in "Nalacharitam." This performance highlighted the contrast between Vasudevan's gentle nature and the evil spirit he embodied. "Kalivesham" explores the conflict between an actor and their character, focusing on the protagonist Gireesan V., who struggles with being possessed by Kali. The play incorporates elements from Kerala's traditional performing arts, including music and acting techniques. Recently staged at T.D.M. Hall in Ernakulam, the production featured rhythmic support from mizhavu beats and Sopana-style singing. The use of a thiraseela curtain effectively enhanced the storytelling by transcending time and space.
