Kerala achieves high drug-related conviction rates in India
Kerala has reported one of the highest rates of convictions in drug-related cases in India. In 2023, the state achieved a success rate of 98.34% in such cases, according to excise and local self-government minister MB Rajesh. The rate slightly dropped to 96.5% in 2024, still significantly higher than the national average of 75%. Rajesh said that since the current government took office, they have registered over 26,000 cases related to narcotics and about 72,000 for alcohol violations. By the end of 2023, nearly 5,000 people were convicted, with close to 4,500 convictions reported in 2024 to date. Three offenders were given sentences of over 35 years. The minister emphasized the importance of a united effort against drug abuse. He called on political groups, communities, and the media to work together, stating that the drug crisis can impact any family. Additionally, Rajesh noted that Kerala is a leader in local self-governance. The state's funding for local bodies has increased from 20.45% in 2010-11 to 28.35% for the upcoming 2025-26 period. He described this decentralized approach as a model for other regions. Regarding waste management, he announced progress in Brahmapuram, where 75% of eight lakh tonnes of waste has been cleared. A new bio-gas plant is set to begin operations by April, converting waste into fuel. The state has raised fines for violations in waste management significantly, from Rs 2 lakh to Rs 5.57 crore in two years. Rajesh criticized the Central government's demand for branding under the LIFE Mission scheme, seeking support from Kerala's MPs to oppose it. He mentioned that despite challenges, the state has sanctioned over 5.44 lakh houses under this scheme, with 4.32 lakh already completed. On poverty eradication, Kerala has been successful in lifting nearly 49,000 out of 64,000 identified families out of extreme poverty, achieving a success rate of 76.46%. Rajesh reiterated Kerala's commitment to advancing social welfare and local governance.
