The Kerala Water Resources Minister Roshy Augustine announced steps to solve the drinking water shortage in Kochi. He spoke about efforts in the Assembly in response to a request for a new water treatment plant in Aluva. The government has approved a project that will expand water supply through a new plant. The Kerala Water Authority will run this project, funded by the Asian Development Bank. Currently, Kochi uses water from four treatment plants in Aluva, providing 225 million litres per day. However, this is not enough to meet the city's growing demand. The new plant will be equipped with modern technology, including a pump house and improved treatment facilities. It will serve Kochi and nearby municipalities such as Aluva, Eloor, and Kalamassery, along with several local panchayats. Minister Augustine also mentioned plans to accelerate projects under the Jal Jeevan Mission and the Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation. These projects aim to ensure water access for homes in both urban and rural areas. The government has set aside ₹2,511 crore for modernising water supply systems in Kochi and Thiruvananthapuram.
