Kerala builds 65 hygienic fish markets for fishermen
The State government has launched a major initiative to build fish markets across the region. Fisheries Minister Saji Cherian announced this effort while inaugurating the renovation of the Kunnummal fish market. So far, construction has been completed on 65 markets. The government is also working on cleaning and updating the remaining markets. The goal is to ensure clean, hygienic environments for fish sales to improve the income of local fishermen. The new markets will include modern facilities. Each market will feature shop rooms, butcher stores, fish stalls, and spaces for daily traders. The construction covers an area of over 273,000 square meters and will provide equipment like stainless steel display trolleys and drainage systems. In addition to shopping areas, the markets will have modern toilets and proper sewage treatment systems. The Kerala State Coastal Development Corporation is overseeing the project, which is expected to be completed within six months.
