Kerala vows strict measures against land encroachment

The Revenue Minister of Kerala, K. Rajan, has announced that the state will take strong action against land encroachments in Idukki district. This announcement comes amid a growing controversy over land-grab incidents in the area. Rajan emphasized the need for his department to follow proper procedures to close any legal gaps that could help the wrongdoers escape punishment. He stated that encroachments, similar to recent cases at Parunthumpara and Chokramudi, have occurred in various locations. The government plans to act swiftly against all such illegal activities. In response to questions about the limited actions taken against three suspended officials in the Chokramudi case, Rajan clarified the complexity of the situation. He pointed out that a comprehensive survey of the land is essential to accurately determine ownership and encroachments. The Revenue department has already annulled four title deeds and reclaimed nearly 14 acres of encroached land. Rajan also described the thorough investigation process initiated after he became aware of the land grab allegations last August. This investigation led to a halt in construction activities in the area and the appointment of a Sub Collector to conduct a detailed survey. The minister highlighted the issue of illegal constructions, especially in Parunthumpara, where prohibitory orders were ignored. A dedicated revenue team and a survey team are now working to address this issue. To prevent future encroachments, the government is implementing a digital resurvey project focusing first on public lands. This project aims to provide a conclusive title for land ownership in Kerala and is expected to take four years. As of now, approximately 6 lakh hectares of land have been measured as part of this initiative, which began in August 2023, after a delay in obtaining necessary equipment.
