Khalil sues Columbia and Barnard over student records release
Mahmoud Khalil has filed a lawsuit against Columbia University and Barnard College to prevent them from releasing student records to Congress. He argues this would violate students' First Amendment rights by exposing them to negative consequences. Khalil, a Columbia graduate and detained anti-Israel protester, claims the House Committee's request for information about students involved in alleged antisemitism is an abuse of power. He is currently in custody in Louisiana. The lawsuit follows a demand from Committee Chair Tim Walberg for the universities to provide details on student disciplinary actions. Khalil also filed a separate petition for his release from detention.
