Kidney disease deaths increased 24% from 1990 to 2021
The rate of death from chronic kidney disease has risen by 24% globally from 1990 to 2021, according to new statistics from the American Heart Association. This increase is concerning as kidney disease heightens the risk of heart problems. Alarmingly, about 90% of U.S. adults with chronic kidney disease are unaware they have it. Experts emphasize the link between kidney health and heart health. Treating kidney disease can help lower the risk of complications such as heart attacks and strokes. Dr. Janani Rangaswami, a physician and volunteer with the American Heart Association, notes that this relationship falls under a broader category called cardiovascular-kidney-metabolic (CKM) syndrome, which affects about one in three U.S. adults. The American Heart Association has launched a Cardiovascular-Kidney-Metabolic Health Initiative to address these issues. This initiative seeks collaboration among healthcare providers to improve care for patients with both cardiovascular and kidney conditions. Kidney disease often coexists with heart disease. Research indicates that three out of five individuals with early kidney disease also have cardiovascular problems. Regular screening for kidney health is crucial. Tests like urine albumin to creatinine ratio (UACR) and estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) can detect early signs of kidney issues. The CKM syndrome has four stages, with higher stages indicating more serious conditions. About 90% of U.S. adults may be in the first stage, which involves excess weight and potential insulin resistance. Stages become progressively severe, with stage four including those diagnosed with heart disease and experiencing symptoms like chest pain and swelling. Understanding the interplay between kidney health and heart health can lead to better treatment outcomes. The initiative also aims to increase the adoption of effective therapies to help manage CKM conditions, potentially reducing the risks of heart attacks and strokes. Overall, raising awareness about the importance of kidney health is vital for improving life quality for those affected by CKM syndrome.
