Kidney disease is a major global health issue
An estimated 850 million people globally suffer from kidney disease, making it the eighth leading cause of death. This number is expected to rise to the fifth leading cause by 2040. In Pakistan, around 25,000 new end-stage kidney disease patients are anticipated in 2025, with a more accurate estimate of 50,000. Only about 25% of these patients may access necessary treatments like dialysis or transplantation. Major risk factors include diabetes, high blood pressure, and obesity. The Pakistan Society of Nephrology is advocating for better healthcare access and screening for high-risk populations to improve kidney health outcomes.
