Kochi faces increasing footpath encroachments, threatening safety
Encroachments by shops and kiosks on footpaths and roads in Kochi are increasing, raising safety concerns for pedestrians. Areas like Kaloor, Kathrikadavu, and Thammanam are particularly affected. Stakeholders criticized the lack of action from civic agencies. The Kerala High Court has previously reprimanded local authorities for not addressing the issue effectively. Stakeholders emphasized the need for better infrastructure to deter encroachments and improve pedestrian safety. In response, Mayor M. Anilkumar stated that the Corporation will follow High Court directives. The Greater Cochin Development Authority reported that notices were issued to shop owners, and they will take action if encroachments continue.
