Koh Samui offers a relaxed lifestyle for expats
Zanette Cross, a real estate agent, moved to Koh Samui, Thailand, with her daughter about nine years ago. Originally from the UK, she and her ex-husband loved the island’s charm and decided to make it their permanent home after having their daughter. They sold their business in the UK and bought a small resort on the island. Although they didn't plan to get rich from it, they wanted a lifestyle change. After 18 months at the resort, Zanette returned to real estate, focusing on luxury villas. Interest in Samui's real estate has grown, partly due to the TV show "The White Lotus," but she believes it’s too early to see its full effect. Zanette has face some challenges adjusting to life in Thailand, but the language barrier was easier than expected. Samui has a large expat community, and many locals speak English. However, European foods can be quite expensive due to taxes. The main tourist spots include popular beaches and resorts, while the atmosphere on the island remains relaxed. Island life has brought a slower pace, which Zanette finds refreshing. She enjoys more time in nature and appreciates the warm weather. The healthcare system has improved, providing her with confidence in her family's well-being. As for real estate, the sector has expanded significantly, especially after the pandemic. More families, especially younger ones, have moved to Samui, attracted by the lifestyle and remote work options. The demand for housing is high, with new international schools opening to support the growing community. Zanette and her daughter plan to stay in Koh Samui for at least five more years as her daughter continues her education. For them, Koh Samui truly feels like home.
