Kolkata Airport celebrates 100 years of service with expansion and centenary events
Kolkata Airport, originally a grass airfield, celebrates its 100th anniversary this year. It evolved from a key stopover for international flights in the 1950s to a period of decline in the 1970s and 80s, before regaining importance after the 1990s. The airport will kick off centenary celebrations on December 21, featuring exhibitions, cultural events, and charity activities. Notable attendees will include government officials and aviation leaders. The airport has undergone significant upgrades, including a new terminal opened in 2013. Currently, Kolkata Airport is expanding its capacity from 26 million to 39 million passengers annually. This growth reflects the airport's renewed status as a major gateway to Southeast Asia and the Gulf region.
