Kolkata airport marks 100 years with calls to restore international flight connections

Kolkata's airport is celebrating its 100th anniversary, with officials calling for a revival of international flight connections. Civil aviation minister Kinjarapu Rammohan Naidu emphasized the need to restore the airport's status as a global hub, which has declined in recent years. At the centenary event, Naidu announced plans to expand the terminal, increasing capacity by 40%. Local MP Sougata Roy urged the ministry to restore direct flights to cities like London and Paris, which have shifted to other airports. The airport currently serves 26 million passengers annually, connecting to 49 domestic and 15 international destinations. Proposed modifications aim to boost capacity to 39 million passengers in the future.
