Korean Air finalizes $32.7 billion Boeing aircraft order
Korean Air is close to finalizing a major deal with Boeing worth $32.7 billion. The announcement was made by South Korea's industry ministry during a visit to the United States aimed at strengthening ties between the two nations. Last year, Korean Air announced a plan to order 20 Boeing 777-9 and 20 Boeing 787-10 planes. There is also an option for an additional 10 aircraft. If this deal is finalized, it would total $24.9 billion. The agreement includes eight spare GE engines, with options for two more, and engine maintenance services worth $7.8 billion. South Korea’s Industry Minister Ahn Duk-geun is in Washington, D.C., for the second time in a month. His visit comes amid growing concerns about U.S. President Donald Trump’s plans to impose tariffs on various trading partners. Ahn believes these deals will encourage further collaboration between South Korea and the U.S. A signing ceremony took place, attended by Ahn, U.S. Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick, and leaders from Korean Air, Boeing, and GE Aerospace. The event marks a significant effort for cooperation under President Trump's second administration. In December, Korean Air completed a $1.3 billion deal to acquire a majority stake in Asiana Airlines, making it one of Asia's largest carriers. Recently, the airline also introduced a new livery and corporate identity. Meanwhile, Malaysia Aviation Group announced a plan to buy 30 Boeing 737 planes, and Japan Airlines revealed intentions to purchase 17 more Boeing 737-8 aircraft.
