Kozhikode MVD struggles with ₹40 crore unpaid fines

thehindu.com

The Motor Vehicles Department (MVD) in Kozhikode district is facing challenges in collecting fines from traffic violators. Since introducing AI-powered cameras in June 2023, about ₹40 crore in fines remain unpaid. These fines were issued for various traffic violations detected by the cameras until February 2025. The most common violations include using mobile phones while driving, not wearing helmets, riding with multiple passengers, and not using seat belts. The MVD has installed 55 functioning AI cameras to monitor these infractions, though five cameras are currently out of service due to technical problems. To manage this AI enforcement, the MVD operates a control room in Chevayur with a dedicated team of 15 members. A senior MVD official noted that while some drivers ignore the fines, others may not be fully aware of them. The department sends notifications to violators to ensure they are informed about their fines and potential consequences, such as vehicle blacklisting. Additionally, MVD officials are investigating cases where motorists are suspected of trying to avoid detection by the cameras. The number of traffic violations identified by the AI cameras is increasing. In the past month, over 33,000 violations were reported, with around 20,000 linked to not wearing helmets.
