Kuwait policeman sentenced for bribery in phone smuggling
A Kuwaiti court has sentenced a policeman and two others to four years in prison for smuggling mobile phones to inmates. The other two defendants are an inmate and a mediator. They were caught after surveillance cameras recorded the illegal act. The group received KD1,000 (about $3,244) for the phones. The policeman has lost his job and must pay double the bribe amount. This case is part of a larger effort in Kuwait to hold law enforcement accountable. Recently, several police officers have faced consequences for misconduct. Earlier this month, a police officer was fired for violating conduct rules. He was seen in a video driving while playing loud music with his girlfriend. The officer admitted to the actions after being questioned by officials. In another case, three officers were dismissed last month for misconduct. This included a police officer who made funny videos on social media without permission. The other two were found guilty of assaulting a prisoner. In January, a former officer received a 15-year sentence for attempting to rob a foreign exchange office.
