Lahore police bolster security against potential terrorist threats
As Chaand Raat approaches, Lahore police are enhancing security measures to protect the public and government buildings. These steps aim to prevent any possible terrorist attacks during this time. Lahore police face challenges regarding their preparedness. Many are questioning whether they have an effective intelligence strategy to combat terrorism. Unlike specialized agencies like the Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD) or the Intelligence Bureau, the Lahore police lack a full espionage network. In an interview, SSP (Operations) Tassawar Iqbal discussed the police’s approach. He stated that while they do not have a separate espionage system, they do have an intelligence system led by the SP of Security. This involves plainclothes officers at police stations who contribute to gathering information. The police rely on information from these officers and tips from intelligence agencies. They collect basic data that can assist in further investigations. Iqbal noted that this routine information gathering has often led to significant arrests. The police monitor public movement in sensitive areas and track residents and tenants. If any suspicious activity is observed, the process for gathering more information is initiated. Iqbal emphasized that the threat of a terrorist attack is very real and the police are committed to ensuring public safety. Certain districts, like Civil Lines and Iqbal Town, are seen as more sensitive. The police have carried out extensive search operations in these areas to identify any suspicious individuals. While recent reports mention terrorist organizations planning attacks in Pakistan, Iqbal believes Lahore is not their primary target. The police continue to work on strategies to enhance security around sensitive installations in the city.
