Latrobe wins softball opener 12-2 against Norwin
Latrobe's softball team had a strong start to the season, defeating Norwin 12-2 in their opener on Monday. Freshman Natalia Sekeres, who learned just minutes before the game that she would be leading off, showcased her skills remarkably. She went 4-for-4, contributing three singles, a triple, and two runs batted in. The Wildcats dominated the game, collecting 12 hits and scoring 12 runs in just five innings. Their offense was impressive, with the top three hitters combining for eight hits and six RBIs. Sekeres was enthusiastic, saying, "We know we can hit." Latrobe quickly took control of the game, scoring multiple times in the second inning after Norwin committed four errors. Coach Bob Kovalcin praised Sekeres for her speed and urged her to keep the ball on the ground. The Wildcats also showcased solid defense and good pitching from senior Mya McHugh. Norwin, last season's WPIAL 6A runner-up, struggled and fell to 0-2, committing six errors throughout the game. Their coach, Brian Mesich, acknowledged that they need to improve. McHugh pitched well for Latrobe, striking out four batters while giving up six hits. Despite trailing by a large margin, Norwin managed to score two runs later in the game. They showed some hope, but Latrobe refused to let them close the gap, ending the game due to the mercy rule after adding one more run in the fifth inning.
