Latvia and Portugal downplay China threat, emphasize dialogue
Latvia and Portugal's leaders are promoting a positive view of China. They emphasize the importance of dialogue rather than seeing China as a threat. Latvia's Foreign Minister Baiba Braze stated that China is not viewed as a threat in Europe, with that label currently reserved for Russia. She stressed the need for respectful dialogue and cooperation with China. Portuguese Parliament member Marcos Perestrello described China as a partner for countries around the world. He noted China’s role as a significant supplier and market but warned against over-reliance on it, calling it a strategic competitor. Both leaders were speaking at a recent conference focused on international relations. Braze highlighted the trade imbalance between Europe and China. She mentioned that while Europe is open to trade, European companies face difficulties entering Chinese markets. This has created challenges for European businesses. Braze also raised concerns about China's military developments. She pointed out that China's nuclear capabilities are growing and may soon rival those of the US and Russia. She called for more transparency regarding China’s military objectives and emphasized the need for discussions on strategic balance and verification.
