"Law & Order" episode includes verdict; real case does not

In the latest episode of Law & Order, the show addresses the real-life Luigi Mangione case. This episode offers a fictional perspective on ongoing events, but it diverges from the current situation in a significant way. Luigi Mangione, a 26-year-old, is accused of murdering Brian Thompson, the CEO of United Healthcare, in December 2024. He faces multiple charges, including terrorism and stalking. His federal trial is set for April 18, with no verdict reached yet in real life. In contrast, the episode shows a character named Ethan who plans to kill insurance company CEOs. His motivation is to incite social change, similar to Mangione's aims. Unlike the real case, the episode follows Ethan’s case through to a jury decision, making it more dramatic. As the story unfolds, Ethan's lawyer is offered a deal for second-degree murder, which would mean a shorter prison sentence. The lawyer, however, opts for the case to go to the jury. Just before revealing the verdict, the screen cuts to black. Actor Jesse Metcalfe praised this ending, saying it allows viewers to form their own opinions without driving them to frustration over unanswered questions.
