Lawmaker proposes security improvements for Pennsylvania EBT benefits
A local lawmaker is planning to introduce a new bill to improve security for EBT benefits in Pennsylvania. This comes after many families, like Jahqwayla Harris from Port Vue, have faced problems with their benefits being stolen. Harris relies on the monthly deposit of over $600 to support her three children. Last week, she discovered that her funds disappeared shortly after they were deposited, with multiple unauthorized transactions occurring across various states. Since October 2022, Pennsylvania has reported more than 23,000 cases of EBT theft. The federal government used to reimburse the victims, but this policy changed in December. As a result, people like Harris are forced to find cash elsewhere to cover their bills and necessities. State Representative Doyle Heffley has received numerous complaints regarding these thefts. He is advocating for a bill that would enhance security measures for EBT cards by encouraging the use of chip technology. Many credit cards already have chips, but upgrading the EBT cards would require retailers to also have the necessary technology. This upgrade would be costly for the Department of Human Services, but Heffley insists it is essential to protect vulnerable individuals from theft. In the meantime, he advises people to take precautions, such as changing their PINs often and checking for skimmer devices before using their cards.
