"Leaving Neverland 2" premieres on YouTube, not HBO
The sequel to the 2019 documentary “Leaving Neverland” is now available on YouTube. The original film won an Emmy for its investigation into Michael Jackson’s alleged abuse of children. The new film, titled “Leaving Neverland 2: Surviving Michael Jackson,” follows the lives of Wade Robson and James Safechuck as they pursue a legal case against Jackson's estate. This case is expected to go to trial in California in 2026. “Leaving Neverland 2” runs for 53 minutes and premiered on YouTube in the United States. In the U.K., it debuted on Channel 4 on March 18. Unlike its predecessor, this sequel is not available on HBO or Max. After the original film's release, the Michael Jackson estate sued HBO, claiming the network breached a non-disparagement agreement. The lawsuit was settled, but HBO decided to remove the first film from their platform. The director, Dan Reed, had hoped to release the sequel with HBO. He expressed disappointment that it could not happen due to legal issues. Reed noted that streaming platforms tend to be cautious about sensitive topics. He believes a YouTube release could reach a wider audience unbound by such constraints. Reed indicated that “Leaving Neverland 2” is part of a planned three-part series. He views this second installment as a bridge leading to a more dramatic conclusion in the final part, which will cover the upcoming trial.
